Category C to C+E Upgrade Training

The Category C to C+E upgrade is designed for drivers who already hold a Category C (Class 2) licence and want to move up to driving articulated HGVs with a trailer. This upgrade expands your licence entitlement and opens access to a wider range of driving roles within the haulage industry.

What is required for me to upgrade to Category C+E?

To complete the Category C to C+E upgrade, you will need:

A valid Category C licence
Driver CPC for professional driving, including:
- CPC Module 3a, which covers the off-road exercises required (reverse exercise and trailer coupling)

We’ll check your existing entitlements and confirm exactly what’s needed before your course begins.

Course duration

The Category C to C+E upgrade course runs over 3 days, with your practical test taking place on the third day. The course is designed to build quickly on your existing driving skills while ensuring you’re fully prepared for articulated vehicle testing.

This upgrade course focuses on the key skills required when moving from rigid to articulated vehicles, including:

Trailer coupling and uncoupling
Reversing exercise
Manoeuvring with a trailer
Road driving techniques specific to articulated HGVs
