Category C+E (Class 1) HGV Training – Direct Access

The Category C+E (Class 1) licence allows you to drive articulated HGVs with a trailer and is the highest level of HGV qualification available. With direct access, you can progress straight from a Category B (car) licence to C+E, making this course ideal for those who want to enter the haulage industry at the top level from the outset.

This licence opens the door to a wide range of driving roles, including long-distance haulage, trunking, and specialist transport work.

What is required for me to gain my Category C+E licence?

To gain your Category C+E licence through the direct access route, you will need to complete the following:

DVLA medical assessment to apply for provisional entitlement
Theory tests, including:
- Multiple-choice
- Hazard perception
Driver CPC (required for professional driving), gained by completing:
- CPC Case Studies
- CPC Module 4 Practical Demonstration

We’ll guide you through the full process and make sure you complete the correct elements before moving on to practical training.

Course duration

The Category C+E direct access course runs over 5 days, with your practical driving test taking place on day five. Each day builds on the last, ensuring you’re fully prepared for test day and life on the road.

Course content

This course focuses on the skills required to safely and confidently operate an articulated vehicle, including:

Trailer coupling and uncoupling
Reversing exercises
Manoeuvring and vehicle positioning
Professional road driving techniques

Training is delivered step-by-step to build confidence, even for those with no previous HGV experience.
