Category D (PCV) Training Course

The Category D licence allows you to drive passenger-carrying vehicles (buses and coaches) and is ideal for those pursuing a career in public transport, private hire, or coach operations. This course is designed to give you the practical skills and knowledge required to operate passenger vehicles safely, confidently, and professionally.

What is required for me to gain my Category D licence?

To gain your Category D entitlement, you will need:

PCV medical assessment for provisional entitlement
Theory tests, including multiple-choice and hazard perception (if not previously completed)
Driver CPC for passenger-carrying vehicles, obtained by completing:
- PCV CPC Case Studies
- CPC Module 4 Practical Demonstration

We’ll guide you through the process to ensure all requirements are completed before practical training begins.

Course duration

The Category D course runs over 4 days, with the practical driving test on the final day. Training is designed to gradually build your confidence and competence, ensuring you’re fully prepared for professional passenger transport driving.

The 4-day course focuses on the skills necessary to drive a bus or coach safely and professionally, including:

Vehicle safety checks and pre-drive inspections
Manoeuvring and advanced turning techniques
Reversing exercise – CPC Module 3a requirements
Passenger safety, boarding, and on-board procedures
Professional road driving standards
Preparation for practical test
